Today was the day chosen by Meta for the (almost) global launch of Threads, its new social network proposal that closely resembles Twitter in design and operation, something we can already take for granted is no coincidence. And yes, I clarify that the launch is almost global, but not quite, because it is likely that you tried to download the application and / or register, but it was not possible for you. Reason? what dCurrently, Meta has not launched Threads in the European Union. And because? It’s not hard to imagine that this has something to do with Meta’s occasional difficulties in adapting to data protection regulations on the old continent.

Outside the borders of the common European space it seems Threads started successfully, to the extent that some analysts already call it a record number of registered users for the launch of a service of this type. And that makes sense for several reasons, of which I think there are two that stand out the most. The first, of course, is its integration with Instagram, meaning that any user with an IG account will have their Threads profile almost immediately.

The second, somewhat less important, but also in weight, is bad moment the Twitter image is going through. Ever since Elon Musk took control of it, erratic management and its impact on the service’s operation has fed up with users and advertisers alike. And to top it off, for those who were still regular users, the maximum number of messages each user can see per day has recently been capped. Unbelievable but true. So of course Threads knew how to arrive at the right time.

Now it seems that Meta is continuing its work (no surprise really) and the latest news about it can be found on TechCrunch confirming this deleting the Threads user account is only possible by deleting the Instagram account. Meta’s reasoning for this is that Threads is actually part of Instagram and users can deactivate the profile of the new social network without affecting the Instagram profile.

The problem, of course, is that Threads aims to become a successful service to the point that at some point it may need to be separated from Instagram to operate as a fully independent service. However, at that moment Meta will lose the advantage that the connection of the two services gives it, which in reality use various websites, applications and interfaces. Which makes me wonder, maybe that forced linking is why the service didn’t make it to the European Union? Makes sense.
