Threads Twitter vs. Meta

Twitter isn’t comfortable with competition from Threads, Meta’s new social media platform. According to Twitter, Meta specifically enticed former employees to divulge trade secrets.

Threads is only a day old, but the platform has already caused quite a stir. Mark Zuckerberg officially cut the ribbon on his latest platform yesterday. Threads allow users to share blogs of up to 500 characters, with or without video. Thanks in part to the fact that Instagram users can log in with their account, Threads attracted thirty million users on its first day.

litigation

The similarities between Threads and Twitter are hard to ignore, and it hasn’t gone unnoticed in the blue bird’s nest either. In a leaked letter from Alex Spiro, Elon Musk’s personal attorney, Meta is accused of stealing “trade secrets” from Twitter to develop the platform. Following Twitter’s recent rounds of layoffs, Meta pulled the ex-employees out of their sleeve to compete with their former employer. Twitter threatens legal action against Meta.

Mark Zuckerberg’s company denies these claims, saying that no former Twitter employee was involved in Thread’s development. From now on, Meta can also simply share this statement on its new platform to rub some extra salt in the wounds. It seems only a matter of time before Musk and Zuckerberg face off. If not in the cage, then in court.

The start of threads was also not without problems. Anyone who created a Threads account but has no intention of staying on the platform will also lose their Instagram account when Threads is deleted. Meta says they are working on a fix for this bug.

Not in Europe yet

None of us in Europe have to worry about that. Meta is not yet bringing threads to the EU for fear of European privacy legislation. The company can hardly justify the almost obligatory exchange of links and data between Threads and Instagram.

You may have already seen APK files floating around to install threads with a workaround, but there are always risks with such files. We therefore do not recommend that you download the app to your smartphone in this way.
