After a week, Google is fixing audio issues that were seriously preventing group conversations in Meet. The ghost of Google Duo haunts the conferencing platform.
Yesterday around 3:45 p.m. came the redeeming message: “The problem with Google Meet has been solved”. After exactly seven days, one hour and five minutes, users of the video conferencing platform can hold group calls again. A sudden drop in audio quality, described by 9to5Google as a “metallic noise,” made group conversations nearly impossible.
The cause of the problems seems to be a strange aftermath of the Google Meet and Google Duo merger, which was announced in 2020 but is actually still in full swing. Google Meet continues to rely on Duo technology to make instant group calls.
This led to a misconfiguration in the audio transmission. One-on-one calls were unaffected as they are hosted on Meet’s source platform. In the coming days, Google will publish a more comprehensive analysis of the problems.
This incident illustrates the confusing marriage between Meet and Duo. There is no real integration of Duo in Meet. Both platforms appear to coexist under the same brand name.
