In a statement released last Wednesday (5), the team blue sky announced the launch of its first paid service to help people set up their own domain to use on the platform. Through a partnership with domain registrar Namecheap, Bluesky’s new service will make it easier to buy and manage domains.

Twitter rival Bluesky reaches 100,000 users…

Social network grows amid controversy with social network bought by billionaire Elon Musk

Bluesky users were already able to set up custom domains and use them as their identities through the company’s AT protocol. However, this required some knowledge of domain registrars and DNS settings. To streamline the process and generate revenue, Bluesky’s new paid domain configuration service continues to use the AT protocol, but can now be completed in minutes, according to the announcement. The company highlighted Namecheap’s reputation for preventing unauthorized transfers of domains and protecting domain names.

More than 13,000 Bluesky users have already redesigned existing domains they own or purchased new domains to use on the platform, according to the company. The advantage is that people can set up and verify their identity in Bluesky and link them to existing websites. As an example in the ballot, US senators use Bluesky’s senate.gov domain to verify their identity. A browser extension developed by a third party ensures that websites are associated with the AT Protocol ID.

Creating your own domain with Bluesky has some advantages. You can find and buy a domain right in the app and use it as your username. To protect user privacy, Bluesky does not record personal data in the WHOIS directory, a public searchable database. You can redirect outgoing emails to a domain address and redirect a domain to a Bluesky profile or other URL. In addition, it is possible to manage domain settings within Bluesky itself.

Other benefits of paid services

The new service also allows Bluesky to remain ad-free. Social media companies such as Facebook and Twitter have largely relied on advertising to pay bills and fund their activities without charging users directly. However, advertising platforms often raise privacy concerns for people exposed to targeted advertising. To avoid this problem, Bluesky intends to offer paid services to generate revenue without relying on advertising.

Traditionally, social media companies have supported their spending through advertising.“, – said the Bluesky team. While advertising can subsidize services and make them free for the end user, they have long-term negative effects, such as encouraging platforms to restrict their users. In the advertising business, when social networks share user data to serve ads to a specific audience, users become a product.

With the support of co-founder and former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, Bluesky has achieved a significant increase in new users. At the same time, Twitter owner Elon Musk continues to develop new policies and restrictions that seem to annoy users. Over the weekend, Musk announced that both verified and unverified accounts would be limited to the number of tweets they read per day.

Due to the large number of new users and the corresponding increase in traffic, Bluesky had to temporarily stop accepting new registrations. However, people can now re-register if they have one of those valuable Bluesky invitations.
