High-speed trains offer a highly efficient mode of transport to move people and goods between destinations. In an age where countries are struggling to reduce their carbon emissions, electric and energy efficient trains can provide an environmentally friendly alternative to air transport.
Trains will run at higher speeds, helping to reduce the difference in travel time between the two modes of transport. For example, the distance between the capital Beijing and Shanghai can take only 2.5 hours by train, which travels at 400 km per hour, similar to traveling by plane.
China has the world’s largest rail network and also operates maglev trains in Shanghai. Using electromagnetic technology, the train glides on rails to eliminate friction and can travel at speeds of up to 500 km per hour.
However, magnetic suspension technology is not widely used in China, and the country is looking for ways to increase the speed of its trains with the existing infrastructure. The China Railway 450 Technological Innovation Project is one such project.
Earlier this year, researchers from the Chinese Academy of Railway Sciences reported that the CR450 is close to ready and has completed a test run on part of China Railway’s network from Fuqing to Quanzhou in eastern China’s Fujian province.
The tests were conducted on the Meizhou Bay Bridge, one of the main sections of the 277-kilometer Fuzhou-Xiamen high-speed railway. More than 57 experiments were conducted in the country to test the reliability and feasibility of new technologies used during the CR450 project, the report said.
The speed of China’s CR450 train reaches 453 kilometers per hour, putting it ahead of high-speed trains operating in different parts of the world.
Another project of Chinese railways, CR Fuxing, is currently in the testing phase and can reach a speed of 420 km per hour. Interestingly, Fuxing trains do not contain any technology patented or licensed by other train manufacturers, demonstrating China’s ability to create faster trains through local innovation. Source
