Twitter users with blue ticks spread fake news about the Russia-Ukraine war.

As reported by Ukrinform, the BBC reported it.

There has been a lot of misleading news about the unrest in France on social media lately, but a post that went viral last week was about US military aid to Ukraine.

There was a screenshot from a news site that looked like a headline, and a picture of two rifles.

“French police were fired by American rifles that may have come from Ukraine,” the headline said.

More than a million views were shared by several Twitter accounts with blue ticks.

The BBC traced the beginning of this spread to pro-Kremlin Telegram channels.

Yes, the image used in the post is from a 2012 Russian military blog about a shooting contest held at a shooting range near Moscow.

The BBC could not find any online article with the title and image above.

Also, there is currently no evidence that any weapon supplied to Ukraine by the US was used during the recent events in France.

Recently several blue tick accounts are said to be spreading a number of other hoaxes, including that Russia has discovered “doll factories” in Ukraine.

Twitter declined to comment on the BBC reporters’ analysis.

As reported by Ukrinform, the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine records cases in the information field of people who publicly advertise themselves as employees of the Ukrainian military intelligence, but who in fact have nothing to do with it.
