Meta, owner of the social network Facebook, will pay 4 million shekels ($1,081,000) to the Israel Representative Claims Fund for illegal use of personal messages.

As reported by Ukrinform, this was reported by Vesty.co.il.

This decision was made by the Rishon Lezion district court, which approved the terms of the pre-trial agreement between the plaintiffs and the company.

According to the Court’s decision, funds should be directed to the implementation of explanatory measures to protect the privacy of users, with special attention to retirees and minors, the poor and people with physical disabilities.

The representative case was opened in 2014.

In the indictment, it was emphasized that Facebook monitors personal messages and uses the obtained information illegally by transferring it to a third party. Lawyers representing Facebook’s interests claimed that the plaintiffs provided false information to the court.

According to them, the company never followed up on personal messages. As part of the pre-trial process, the company pleaded not guilty.

At the same time, a statement from Facebook management was added to the lawsuit that “in June 2015, this type of practice (tracking messages) was completely stopped.” Thus, there is indirect recognition of the illegal activity carried out at the time the case was brought.

As reported by Ukrinform, Microsoft Corporation will pay a $20 million fine for resolving US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) allegations of illegally collecting personal information about children without parental consent.
