It seems like just yesterday that many companies in the world of video games, Sega among them, were envisioning great opportunities for the future of the sector in blockchains. and especially in NFT. Those were the days when Axie Infinity pointed to a new reality where we could earn a lot of money just by playing. The fact that the constant entry of new player-investors was necessary to pay off those already inside was of course not at all suspect, thanks to the always impressive power of denial.
I still remember several conversations I had at that time with some acquaintances who decided to devote 8, 12 and even 16 hours a day to the Axie Infinity and who, in the face of my skepticism, promised to keep me updated in the future. from its headquarters in the Caribbean. And that was partly due to his own gullibility, but to be fair, We must not ignore the role played by many top studios and distributors who predict an incredible future.
The case I remember as particularly bloody was that of Ubisoft, which introduced its Quartz service in late 2021 to create a secondary market for its gaming digital assets. The reception of the service has been, quite frankly, abysmal, and how has Ubisoft responded to this? Maybe doing an analytical exercise on where they might have gone wrong? Far from it, they chose to blame the users who, in the summary of the statement of one of their managers, were ignorant. Cheers!
Sega was one of the first companies to show interest in this world, promising us an exceptional secondary market, gaming earning opportunities, NFT interoperability… in short, the average gamer’s paradise. However, time passed and what we encountered most along the way were scams, scams and more scams. And of course the growing lack of interest on the part of users who every day they became increasingly aware of the colossal fiasco. Something that, of course, companies had to respond to.
Better late than never, they should have thought of the Japanese multinational, so according to what we can read in Bloomberg, Sega has decided to virtually withdraw from the NFT and Blockchain ecosystem entirely. According to Shuji Utsumi, co-CEO of Sega, his company is abandoning most of its plans related to the blockchain world. This means no third-party blockchain projects and no internal blockchain games. All possible crypto products and NFTs have been shelved indefinitely.
It’s also interesting how Utsumi argues for this decision, and it boils down to two basic and very important points: the game play to earn (the ones where you earn money by playing, like Axie Infinity) they are not funnyand the presence of blockchain-based elements such as NFTs, not contribute anything to the players. Some announcements that could spell the final blow to the world, NFT, which has seemed doomed for some time now.
I said yes the download is almost complete as Sega will keep their main properties like Sonic and Yakuza away from the NFT ecosystem but it is not out of the question that some less popular franchises may offer room for NFTs created by third parties. Of course, if their users are aware that the company is denying this technology for its big titles, it seems unlikely that they will trust the presence of these digital assets in “smaller” franchises.
