Renowned Norwegian cruise ship Hurtigruten recently announced its ambitious plans to build the world’s first zero-emission cruise ship. Called Sea Zero, the project is set to revolutionize the cruise industry by combining state-of-the-art technology with sustainability.
The ship, which is expected to be launched in 2030, will feature a range of advanced technologies to deliver the proposed energy efficiency. Innovations include solar-powered retractable sails, retractable thrusters, counter-rotating propellers, air lubrication systems and state-of-the-art hull coatings.
However, one of the most impressive aspects of this project is the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) to maneuver the ship. AI will not only significantly reduce the size of the ship’s bridge, but also optimize docking operations by collecting real-time data to continuously improve operational efficiency.
To help the process not outgassing and be completely sustainable, the ship will be fully electric. The company said its batteries will be recharged from renewable energy sources when it is anchored in port. In addition, battery levels will be displayed on the outer sides of the ship, making it easy to see how much power is left.
The Sea Zero project has now entered a two-year testing phase during which the proposed technologies will be tested and fine-tuned to create a zero-emission ship. The current R&D phase focuses on battery manufacturing, propulsion technology, housing design and sustainable practices that reduce energy consumption to an absolute minimum.
Passengers will also play an important role in keeping the ship sustainable. With an interactive app on board, they will be able to control their water and energy consumption. Hurtigruten expects these initiatives to result in a 50% reduction in energy consumption compared to its current ships.
The cruise company is doing a general fleet upgrade to make it cleaner. Two of the seven ships have already been upgraded to battery-powered hybrid ships, and a third will be upgraded this fall. The remaining five vessels are equipped with various technologies that will reduce CO² emissions by 25% and nitrogen oxides by 80%.
Hurtigruten Norway CEO Hedda Felin expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating “We aim to build a ship that outperforms everyone else in terms of energy efficiency and sustainability in just a few short years.”
