The Supreme Court of Guatemala gave the green light to the official release of the election results on June 25, declaring groundless lawsuits of right-wing political parties that they suspended the electoral process.

The Supreme Court has ruled to “declare inadmissible the amparo appeals” filed by political parties alleging irregularities in the vote count, the court said at a press conference.

In addition, magistrates annulled an amparo handed down on 1 July by the Constitutional Court, Guatemala’s highest court, which suspended the tabulation of the election results because, in their opinion, the electoral authorities complied with the requirement to re-examine.

The Supreme Electoral Tribunal must now formally announce the results, award public offices and organize a presidential vote scheduled for August 20 next year.

This morning, the president of the electoral court, Irma Palencia, said that the results will be approved this week after the completion of the technical processes.

From July 4 to 6, the electoral authorities conducted a comparison of electoral protocols at the national level at the request of the Constitutional Court, and during the process no significant changes were identified that affect the results obtained on election day.

Action by the traditional parties followed the surprise promotion of the progressive academic Bernardo Arevalo de León of the Seed Movement, who came in second.

Arevalo De Leon will run for the presidency against former First Lady Sandra Torres Casanova of the National Unity of Hope (ENE), who lost the 2015 and 2019 elections.
