The federal government is considering converting post offices into free Internet hotspots. The project, which is being discussed by the Ministry of Communications (MCom), is part of a broader plan to restructure and modernize the state-owned company.

The proposal is for each of the 9,456 post offices located in 5,553 Brazilian municipalities to become a hotspot with free Wi-Fi. Fabiano Silva, president of Correios, argues that the company should be recognized not only for its postal services, but also for its “social function”.

He believes that the presence of Correios in all municipalities of the country can make a difference, especially in places where Internet access is still limited. The idea is that, having come to the “postal square” in any city, people can access the Internet for free.

Silva notes that communication is a right guaranteed by the Brazilian state, and that Correios must guarantee this right. However, the project is still in the early stages of discussion and partnerships are being explored.

Correios is working to bring about change in the coming years

The Correios team is working on changes to be implemented over the coming years, including improving the business model and repositioning it to participate in public policy.

The state-owned company is in talks with the municipal authorities, creating alternative service channels and taking steps to increase the attractiveness of locating staff in locations away from urban centers.

While there is still no set timeline for the free internet project, Silva hopes a concrete proposal will be submitted later this year. It is worth noting that only post offices should become free Wi-Fi points, since the idea does not yet include collection points.
