Qualcomm does not spare even Apple executives in litigation, calling some of them as witnesses in a lawsuit in which the company is not even involved, the corporation’s lawyers say. Justice has been asked to prevent Apple and its employees/executives from receiving more subpoenas accusing the rival chip maker of retaliation for previous clashes they had.
Companies are already aware of the integration in the market and will be able to work on upgrades with a long-term commitment.
The current lawsuit is filed by investors against Qualcomm, accusing the corporation of fraud by artificially inflating its market value. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has previously filed an antitrust suit against it, but has lost in the past. Now, as part of their defense, they are trying to get testimony from Jeffrey Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer, and Bruce Watrous, current general counsel. Both have contacted their lawyers, arguing that they are not part of this legal dispute.
According to Reuters, Apple is categorically against the involvement of its leaders in this case. “The reports with the FTC are not related to the security dispute between Qualcomm and its investors, who allege that Qualcomm is making false statements.” The lawyers also add that “this appears to be an opportunity to provoke Apple, its former opponent in the courts.”
It is worth remembering that Apple and Qualcomm have already entered into legal conflicts, becoming a stone in the shoe for both businesses. In the past, Apple bought modem chips from Qualcomm to use in its iPhones, but they had a patent and the corporation charged a separate license fee for using the technology. Obviously, Apple would not do it cheaply and opposed, opening up new opportunities and further complicating the relationship between them.
There have already been reports of “hostile” meetings between executives of the two companies, lawsuits by billionaires, and even Qualcomm’s refusal to sell chips to Apple, which at the time supplied the iPhone XR and XS. Both made an agreement, but everything has never been the same, and it seems that the grievances still remain.
