Google is developing a new feature for flight mode called Connected Flight Mode. The company has applied for a patent from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) for this technology. The goal is to turn off your mobile device’s radios while in flight while keeping Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections active.
The connected flight mode is activated automatically when the device detects that you are flying. This will be possible thanks to the sensors in the device, which will monitor changes in acceleration and speed, pressure drops and the presence of certain sounds. In addition, contextual factors such as trip booking activity and registration status will be taken into account.
Currently, when you activate airplane mode on your phone, all connections, including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, are disabled. However, you can access Bluetooth and Wi-Fi by turning them on separately after enabling Airplane Mode. This type of functionality exists for both Android and iOS.
Internet during the flight will give the best quality
When Airplane Mode is enabled, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi remain available for use in an aircraft. The functionality will also allow your Wi-Fi connected device to operate as if it were connected to the same “high bandwidth and unlimited usage” as the Wi-Fi you use on the ground.
This means that bandwidth-intensive processes such as photo backups can still be performed in-flight, regardless of the actual capabilities and quality of the on-board network. As such, they can consume a significant amount of the aircraft’s limited internet connection resources.
As interesting as the idea sounds, it remains to be seen when Connected Flight Mode will become a reality on Android devices. In addition, the offer seems interesting even for iPhone users who would need to see a similar move from Apple.
It remains unclear whether Google will provide this functionality to Android users or whether Apple will use a similar technology. However, the patent shows that Google is already studying this particular technology for use in flight computers.
