As reported by Ukrinform, reported Yonhap.
The Personal Information Protection Commission fined LG Uplus Corp., saying the company’s customer authentication system as a whole was “inadequate” and that the data leak was caused by a lack of investment and effort to protect customer information.
The financial penalty imposed is the largest the regulator has imposed on a South Korean company.
The operator said that in January, the personal data of nearly 300,000 customers, including names, birth dates, home addresses and phone numbers, was hacked in a cyberattack and made public on an illegal website.
The Commission suspects that LG Uplus customers’ personal information was hacked in June 2018 and noted that the operator did not take sufficient care in protecting the personal information stored in its system.
In addition to the fine, the commission instructed LG Uplus to strengthen privacy protections and rebuild internal systems to protect customers.
The regulator also urged the operator to implement a series of security measures that LG Uplus promised to take after the incident in January, including investing 100 billion won per year and hiring cybersecurity experts to prevent personal information leaks.
As reported by Ukrinform, Chinese authorities announced that they had fined Ant Group 7.1 billion yuan ($984 million).
