Google announced the release of Android 14 Beta 4, signaling that the stable version of the operating system may arrive in August. This latest update comes after months of development and bug fixing and results in a more refined build. The release, originally expected to launch on July 5th, was delayed a bit due to the holiday, but is now available on eligible Pixel devices starting with the Pixel 4a (5G).

Android 14 Beta 4 with build number UPB4.230623.005 includes the July security patches and weighs around 200MB depending on the device. The release notes reveal an extensive list of bug fixes that address system issues and improve overall performance.

What has been fixed in this update?

Fixed issues reported by developers include notifications and quick settings tiles not working until device restart, VoIP apps that stop recording audio when the screen is locked or the app is running in the background, and crashes when viewing current playback songs while switching. always on the lock screen.

Other fixes include charging issues, Android System Intelligence crashes, CredentialManager registry related bugs, null pointer exceptions in HealthConnect API, boot loops, inconsistent elements in system UI when switching modes, and Unresponsive Image input – Image Window (in PiP mode) and when using certain apps on screen lock.

Additionally, the update fixes issues with lock screen background image, poor UI animations in launcher, incorrect intent selection dialog when setting work profile, incorrect display of round bezels in notifications, unresponsiveness when eSIM is disabled, crashes caused by ConnectivityService. system volume slider, TalkBack accessibility issues, fingerprint registration errors when rotating the device, incorrect sorting of Bluetooth devices in the system audio output switcher, and other stability and performance improvements. Specifically, this beta is now also available for Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet devices, and users can sign up for the beta program to receive early updates. Based on previous release patterns, this is probably the penultimate beta before the stable release. After a similar timeline to Android 13, which released beta 4 in early July and stabilized in August, Google seems to be following a similar path this year. Although the update is starting to roll out, it may take some time for all users depending on their device and carrier.
