Heat waves to continue in July and August after June record: WMO

The scientific arm of the United Nations suggests that temperature stays above normal in the Mediterranean region with weekly temperatures up to 5 degrees Celsius above average.

“This extreme weather is an increasingly frequent climate change event and has a major impact on human health, ecosystems, the economy, agriculture, energy and water supplies,” said WMO Secretary-General Professor Petteri Taalas.

The U.S. and Moroccan weather services also issued high temperature warnings for the coming weeks, which Taalas called “urgent” and reminded of the importance of reduce greenhouse gas emissions “as fast and deep as possible.”

If this situation does not change, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change – the highest scientific authority on the subject – believes that By 2050, about half of Europe’s population could be at risk high or very high heat overload in summer.
