A hoard containing more than 700 American Civil War gold found in a cornfield in Kentucky is up for sale and is expected to fetch millions.
The “Great Kentucky Treasure” was discovered earlier this year on a farm in the Bluegrass State, according to the firm that grades the coins and the company that sells them.
The exact location of the find and the identity of the person who found the coins could not be determined.
In a video posted to GovMint.com selling the hoard, a man is seen pulling coins out of the ground and can be heard saying, “This is the craziest thing.” GovMint.com says the coins are dated between 1840 and 1863 and include the $1 Gold Indian, the $10 Gold Release, and the $20 Gold Release.
Among them are 18 extremely rare $20 gold Liberty coins minted in Philadelphia in 1863, and GovMint.com says it has received six-figure sums from collectors.
“The significance of this discovery cannot be overstated,” said Jeff Garrett, a rare coin dealer contacted by the anonymous finder a few months ago.
“The staggering figure of more than $700 represents a virtual time capsule of Civil War coins,” Garrett said in a statement.
Kentucky took a neutral position during the 1861-1865 Civil War between the slave-owning South and the North, but was nevertheless drawn into the bloody conflict.
“The great Kentucky hoard may be the result of this conflict, in which the coins have been lost for more than 150 years,” said the Numismatic Guarantee Company, which endorsed the coins. Source
