As you may remember, we told you this at the end of April YouTube Music followed other music streaming services, by adding podcasts to your catalog. A debut that, as usual, was initially only produced in the United States, leaving the rest of the world to wait for its jump to international markets, as Google did not make any statement specifying when said move would take place. since then by many.
It turns out very interesting the evolution that this content format has gone through. Recall that in the middle of the first decade of this century, Apple decided to bet on podcasts by including them in iTunes, the software and content store that fed the iPod, which became the portable music player par excellence of those years. However, despite such support, they did not become as popular as one might expect, and with the emergence of several platforms dedicated exclusively to the format, it did not become mass-consumed, to the extent that many took it for granted. a failed experiment that would remain little more than a niche product.
However, for whatever reason, they gained importance again a few years ago, but this time around they generated much more interest from the general public and led platforms like Spotify to start investing heavily in producing exclusive content. Which brings us to the current situation where the major music streaming services, with the sole exception of Apple, have a large selection of podcasts in their catalogs. And I say that with the exception of Apple Music, because those from Cupertino have a specific application and service for podcasts.
Just yesterday we told you that YouTube Music had released a new design, and we were only interested in podcasts. As we can read in 9to5Google, Apple Music podcasts have started appearing outside the US, confirming that the international expansion of this long-awaited feature has already begun. The media outlet specifically confirms that it has been reported by users from Brazil and Canada, and that they have local language support in both cases. They do not clarify, yes, if they refer to Canada only in English or also in French.
Access to YouTube Music podcasts is at the top of the interface, to the right of the five moods/activities (relax, energy, exercise, commute and focus). Click on this entry will show a feed personalized, in which we find content grouped by category, but also recommendations based on our history and direct access to continue listening to those we are halfway through. It will also have a classic YouTube feature, a list of those episodes we’ve marked to watch/listen to later.
An interesting aspect of YouTube Music podcasts is that offline and background playback is enabled for all users, not just premium account holders, although in these cases they find advertising inserts. And also, as with other services, we will only have access to podcasts that have been uploaded to the platform, that is, we will not be able to use YouTube Music as an aggregator to add other sources of this type of content.
