Apple uses its extensive experience with ARM to achieve the seemingly impossible, changing the hardware architecture of all its computing equipment in just three years using chips of its own design and achieving remarkable results in performance that no other manufacturer has achieved. at the same time bring this RISC platform to the PC.

Apple certainly enjoys a closed hardware and software ecosystem that makes this task easier, but even so, a strategic change of this magnitude is valuable on the level of the one made some time ago to replace the PowerPC platform with Intel. and now he wants more.

The new Mac M3

The premiere of the third generation of self-made SoCs was expected to take place at the developer conference WWDC 2023, but in the end it did not arrive. According to Bloomberg, the launch will take place in October next year in three different teamsthe new AIO iMac M3 (probably increasing the screen size as well) and updates to the 13-inch MacBook Pro and MacBook Air laptops.

There is no official data on these M3s, but from the information leaked so far, they will have a big novelty to begin with, jump to 3 nm. Manufacturing processes are key to pushing the limits of silicon, and this generation will use the latest from TSMC’s foundry, a significant leap over current 5nm technology. This higher density would allow Apple to include more processor cores and memory on the M2.

As in previous versions Apple will use a hybrid design combining high-performance cores with others that will strive for the best energy efficiency and attend to the most basic tasks. If Apple followed the strategy of the first two generations, the platform would be distributed in three versions:

• M3 Pro: 12-core CPU, 18-core GPU and 36 GB RAM.
• M3 Max: 14-core CPU, 40-core GPU.
• M3 Ultra: 28-core CPU, 80-core GPU.
