The truth is that after the success that SEGA achieved with its Mega Drive mini, many of us began to dream of a possible launch saturnmini. Creating an adaptation of this legendary 32-bit console would be the next natural step for the Japanese company if it wanted to expand its family of mini systems, and the truth is that it would also be a very interesting project.
What can I say, the Saturn was one of the consoles that got me the most interested, but it was also one of the least fun at the time and that’s a real shame because In general, its presence in Europe was somewhat limited. However, it was a real success in Japan and had a really good catalog of games in that market.
A Saturn mini release would allow all SEGA fans, myself included, to really enjoy this console and I think could very well be received as long as the Japanese company adheres to minimum guidelines for build quality and the selection of included games. The latter would be complicated because the console has a very rich catalog and there are a lot of essentials.
In fact, in an interview with Famitsu, SEGA’s president and COO, Yukio Sugino, stated that Saturn has surprisingly high performance, always taking into account that we are talking about a system that is already a few years old, and therefore it is difficult to develop a mini version. Because of this, the executive believes that they cannot simply say “we’ll do it because it will sell well” and that it will take much longer.
There is no doubt that a Saturn mini would be perfectly feasible, after all Sony was able to launch the PlayStation mini. However, the quality of game emulation is essential on this type of system and in that sense, it’s clear that PlayStation 1 emulation has been mastered for years, while Saturn games have yet to reach that level.
SEGA and recognized at the time that they were thinking about the possibility of releasing not only the Saturn mini but also the Dreamcast mini, so it is finally clear that the company is also interested in those projects and that they can eventually become a reality. The biggest obstacle for the development of the former would be, as I said, the quality of the emulation, while for the latter we would have it more in the hardware, since the Dreamcast games are more demanding and take up more space.
Before I finish, I’ll take this opportunity to ask you a question, which would you prefer, the Saturn mini or the Dreamcast mini? If I had to choose just one, I stay with the other one.
