The original 4GB iPhone, still sealed in its original packaging, sold for an astronomical $190,372 at LCG Auctions. The cost, which equates to around R$910,000 at current quotes, is almost 380 times the original price of the device launched in 2007, priced at $500.
The 4 GB iPhone, released alongside the 8 GB model, did not have the same sales success as its more reliable sibling. Consumers preferred to pay $100 more for the 8GB model, resulting in sluggish sales for the 4GB model. Because of this, Apple decided to discontinue the 4GB iPhone just two months after its launch.
The original 4 GB iPhone, released in 2007, had a 3.5-inch TFT display with Gorilla Glass, a 1400 mAh battery, and a single 2 MP rear camera. The original device didn’t even have 3G connectivity, despite the fact that the standard had been available for several years at the time.
The rarity of this model, combined with its factory condition, has made it one of the most coveted items for tech collectors. The fact that it was discontinued so quickly after its release has made the 4GB iPhone something of a “Holy Grail” among iPhone collectors.
“The original 4GB model is considered the Holy Grail among iPhone collectors. Its extreme rarity is directly related to its limited production. Debuting on June 29, 2007, along with the 8 GB model, the 4 GB model suffered from slow sales. The delay in sales led to Apple’s decision to discontinue the 4 GB model on September 5, 2007,” LCG Auctions said in an explanation of the device.
In addition to the 4 GB iPhone, three other original iPhones were sold at the auction. The 2007 8 GB model retailed for $53,725.20, while the 2008 16 GB model and 2007 European 8 GB model retailed for $13,789.20 and $7,075.20, respectively. In total, four iPhones raised almost $265,000.
The 4 GB iPhone auction isn’t the first one where the price is exorbitant. In February 2023, a still-sealed 8GB iPhone was auctioned off for $63,000. Another sealed model sold for just over $39,000 in October 2022.
