General Atomics is developing a jet drone for the US military as part of the LongShot armed drone program. Summer tests of the prototype will take place in 2024.
Within the scope of the tests, it is planned to test the prototype directly in the sky and to conduct training shots at air targets simulating enemy aircraft. The prototype of the LongShot jet unmanned aerial vehicle is planned to be equipped with air-to-air missiles.
Companies such as Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman are also involved in the development of the LongShot jet drone. Military engineers, together with General Atomics experts, will create a jet aircraft on behalf of the US Army that will be a means of supporting US Air Force military aircraft.
The LongShot drone can be launched from the fuselage of a fighter or bomber, working together with the pilot of the main aircraft, or independently repel air strikes with missiles. Such a unique opportunity allows a piloted aircraft to attack the enemy from a safer distance. Source
