A Anatel (National Telecommunications Agency) announced last Thursday (13) the introduction of new technical requirements for certification TV box in Brazil. These measures are aimed at combating the illegal sale of devices in the country, strengthening the fight against the unauthorized use of pay TV and streaming signals, commonly known as cat mesh.

Anatel may block live pirated TV broadcasts
In 2023, a laboratory will open with equipment that cuts off illegal streaming in real time.
The new rules are part of Law No. 9281 of July 5th. Anatel says the new requirements are designed to check for features that are used to infringe copyright in audiovisual works.
In addition, these devices have undocumented communication ports that can be used in cyberattacks. Thus, they can invade the user’s local network, collect personal information and carry out denial of service attacks. The new rules come into effect on September 11th.
Check out the new analyzed criteria:
- The existence of any software or application installed by default on the product, included in the list of non-standard equipment or software published or approved by Anatel.
- The presence in the product of any software, applications, features or instructions that indicate an infringement of copyright in audiovisual content.
- If the equipment provides the ability to change the characteristics of its operating system (root mode) or if it allows the installation of unverified third-party applications in the official store, which makes it easier for the average user to install pirated applications.
- If there is information or instructions on the use, update or installation of software or applications designed to illegally access audiovisual content on the website of the manufacturer or its national representative, in the product manual or in any other documentation related to the equipment.
With these new measures, Anatel aims to strengthen controls on the sale of illegal devices that encourage the piracy of copyrighted content. Certification becomes mandatory to ensure that TV Boxes sold in Brazil meet the requirements set by the regulatory body.
The National Communications Agency stepped up its efforts to combat piracy and protect the rights of audiovisual content owners. The new rules are expected to help curb the sale of devices that provide illegal access to paid content, while guaranteeing the legality and quality of TV and streaming services in the country.
In this way, Anatel strengthens its commitment to promote a regulated and secure environment, combat piracy and protect audiovisual copyrights through these technical measures aimed at controlling the commercialization of non-standard Box TVs, commonly known as “gatonet”.
