No country has yet reachedgender parity general“, and less than one per cent of the world’s women and girls live in countries where gap of the small sex indicated this Tuesday in Rwanda UN Women And United Nations Development Program (UNDP)in a new report.

“The international community is committed to gender equality and the empowerment of women. However, from these new studies we can clearly see that in all countries women they are not yet able to reach their full potential and the gender gap is common,” said the Executive Director of UN Women. sima bachuswhen submitting a report.

Both organizations have proposed two new indexes to assess the status of women in the world and “paving the way for targeted interventions and policy reforms”: Women’s Empowerment Index (WEI, for its abbreviation in English), and Global Gender Equality Index (GGPI).

According to Bacchus, these tools “capture important aspects of gender equality that have previously gone unnoticed or ignored.”

WEI measures women’s power and freedom to make decisions and seize opportunities, while GGPI assesses women’s status relative to men in key human development issues (health, education, inclusion and decision-making).

Two UN agencies have warned that, according to both new indices, “women, on average, are only able to achieve 60% reach their full potential” and “achieve 72% what people can achieve in terms of human development”.

“Analysis of data from 114 countries shows that 3.1 billion women and girls live in countries with low or average performance in terms of women’s empowerment,” said UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner.

The Executive Director of UN Women concluded that “continued efforts are needed to deliver on the promise of gender equality, guarantee the human rights of women and girls, and fully ensure their fundamental freedoms.”

The report was launched on Tuesday in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, on the occasion of the Women Deliver 2023 (WD2023) conference, which runs until next Thursday. EFE
