What is the Ukrainian accused of?
Police found the fugitive at the airport when he boarded the plane to Barcelona. A man once committed a massive fraud against a large number of Internet users by creating and distributing malware known as scary software. It caused more than $70 million in economic damage.
The term scareware refers to malicious or fraudulent software that deceives users by warning them of false threats. Such attacks aim to scare people (for example, malware victim reports that their machine is infected with multiple viruses) to make them buy a rogue security program or share sensitive information with attackers.
The unnamed detainee fell into the hands of Spanish police with the help of the FBI and Interpol – he has been wanted internationally for the past 10 years. From 2006 to 2011, he and his accomplices used a network of servers scattered around the world to infect the computers of hundreds of thousands of victims. They received pop-up messages about viruses on their computers and paid up to $129 to get fake software without knowing that they were paying the person who infected their device.
It is not yet known which term he is facing.
