Mexico stands for an end to the blockade of Cuba by the United States and Venezuela, This was stated by Foreign Minister Alicia Barcena on Tuesday during the summit of the leaders of the European Union (EU) and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac).

Barcena continued his speech by pointing out that Mexico refuses to continue to be “suppliers of critical raw materials and low-skilled labor with worse wages.”

“We are facing a change of era, If we do not take appropriate measures, the consequences of climate change, illegal migration, illegal arms and drug trafficking will touch the very foundations of human civilization,” concluded Barsena.

The EU and Celac, with the exception of Nicaragua, ruled on Tuesday in favor of end the US economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba and pointed out that the inclusion of the country in the list of state sponsors of terrorism hinders international financial transactions with the Caribbean island.

Nicaragua did not sign the final declaration of the summit disagreement over the inclusion of a paragraph in which the two blocs express “deep concern” about the “war against Ukraine.”

In accordance with the resolution approved by the General Assembly of the United Nations on 3 November 2022, the 27 members of the EU and the 32 members of Celac included in their conclusions a clause on “the need to end the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed against Cuba” and recalled their “opposition to laws and regulations having extraterritorial effect”.
