Samsung already has the first 32 GHz GDDR7 memory available

The South Korean giant has completed the development of its GDDR7 memory and confirmed that it is ready to start shipping this new component to its first customers by the end of the rest of the year. This tells us something very important, which is that the first products using this new type of memory could hit the market in first or second half of 2024.

The GDDR7 memory represents a significant improvement over the current GDDR6 memory in terms of both performance and efficiency, although it is true that its working speed ends up being a little lower than we expected from the first information. in their first version they aimed for a frequency of 36 GHz and a maximum peak of 50 GHz in future versions.

Finally, the first version of this Samsung GDDR7 memory will arrive at speed 32 GHz, This number represents a 33% increase compared to GDDR6 memory. With this new type of graphics memory, it will be possible to create sa configurations higher bandwidth using the classic 128-bit, 192-bit, 256-bit, 320-bit, 384-bit and 512-bit bus configurations.

GDDR memory

For example, a configuration of 384 bits and GDDR6 at 20 GHz would give us a bandwidth of 960 GB/s, while the same bus with GDDR7 would increase the bandwidth to 1536 GB/s, that means we have an increase of more than 50%. A modest 128-bit bus connected to this new graphics memory would already provide an impressive bandwidth of no more and no less than 512 GB/s.

According to Samsung, the GDDR7 memory will also offer a 20% improvement in efficiency and improve thermal conductivity thanks to the use of a new epoxy molding compound that reduces thermal resistance by up to 70%. It has not yet been confirmed which products will be the first to use this new type of memory, but we can guess which ones will arrive first.

Barring a surprise, I think it’s most likely that both NVIDIA and AMD will reserve GDDR7 for their future graphics cards, so for GeForce RTX 50 and Radeon RX 8000, which will be the successors of the current generation. It’s important to keep in mind that intergenerational refreshes of the GeForce RTX 40 and Radeon RX 7000 will hit the market before their launch, so it’s likely that we won’t see them until the second half of 2024.
