Samsung announces GDDR7 memory for future GPUs

The development of new graphics memory for the GPUs of tomorrow is complete. GDDR7 memory would be significantly faster but also more economical than existing GDDR6 memory.

Samsung shows GDDR7 memory for future hard drives. The new memory has a speed of 32 Gb/s per pin and is about forty percent faster than 24 Gb/s GDDR6 memory. The company states that its GDDR7 DRAM has a bandwidth of 1.5 Tbps, compared to 1.1 Tbps for GDDR6.

Samsung also states that its graphics DRAM is around 20 percent more efficient than its predecessor. For example, with GPUs in laptops, the memory is given a low-power mode and actually operates at a lower voltage.

integration into GPUs

The memory will initially find its way into the high-end GPUs of some key customers. This year the memory will be verified there. While Samsung doesn’t name names, we suspect Nvidia is at the top of the list of partners. Because according to Samsung, GDDR7 memory will improve the performance of GPUs in workstations, gaming PCs, but also in HPC workloads.

The manufacturer experimented with new materials for thermal conductivity so that the memory generates as little heat as possible. Samsung has a scoop. Competitor Micron also plans to sell GDDR7 in the first half of 2024, but it appears that Samsung will be the first to cross the finish line.
