Putin to be arrested in South Africa if he travels to BRICS but attends via video link

President of Russia, Vladimir Putin will contact by video link to attend his participation at the BRICS summit, which will be held August 22-24 in Johannesburg (South Africa), confirmed in the Kremlin.

For its part, South Africa stated in its statement that On behalf of Putin, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will attend.and will be present along with the leaders of Brazil, India, China and South Africa (a bloc known as BRICS).

In March last year, South Africa issued a writ – as a member of the International Criminal Court (ICC) – to arrest the President of Russia for alleged war crimes committed during the invasion and conflict that was carried out against Ukraine.

In particular, the ICC accuses Putin for the alleged illegal deportation of children to Ukraine.

On this occasion, Russia pointed out that the order is invalid because it is not a member of the International Criminal Court, in addition to not hiding the program under which it deported thousands of Ukrainian children, but on the contrary, presents the strategy as a humanitarian campaign to protect orphans and abandoned children in the conflict zone.

A court file was released on Tuesday showing South African President Cyril Ramaphosa asked the ICC for permission not to arrest Putin during the meeting, saying it would mean a declaration of war and hinder his country’s efforts to end the conflict in Ukraine.
