It looks like Microsoft is working on a new updated HoloLens headset. But this model can be used by the US military, not for consumers. The company’s updated HoloLens is being tested by the US military as combat goggles.
The American technology giant has recently confirmed that it is supplying IVAS 1.2 (Integrated Visual Magnification System) devices to the US Army. These AR (augmented reality) headsets are thinner and lighter than previous iterations and aim to improve the soldier’s performance in the field. These HoloLens powered combat goggles will increase battlefield awareness. Infantry units can now see the location of their squadmates, take key health metrics, and use night vision. It can also help plan and coordinate attacks and alert soldiers when an ally is injured.
Currently, the Army is testing about 20 prototypes of IVAS goggles with two platoons. These tests will test its low-light performance, test its reliability, and see if it’s suitable for soldiers. Previous iterations were causing eyestrain and discomfort, and the soldiers were sick. Some of its core functions also frequently failed.
Testing will begin at the end of August and Microsoft will deliver the improved IVAS systems by the end of this month. Based on these tests, the US Army could sign a formal contract next year and operational combat tests could begin in 2025. The U.S. military could spend $21.9 billion a decade on more than 121,000 IVAS units.
