A few days ago we saw that Intel decided to abandon the design and production of NUC, news that did not mean the life of this product, but rather the beginning of a new stage. Production and development of this series of mini PCs was left in the hands of third partiesand today it was confirmed Intel and ASUS have entered into an agreement which completely guarantees the continuity of this type of device.
ASUS will be in charge take on more responsibility within the NUC ecosystem, as they will continue to support current models based on Core Gen10, Core Gen11, Core Gen12 and the latest Core Gen13 processors. They will also develop new NUCs based on next-generation processors based on architectures that, for obvious reasons, have yet to materialize.
Honestly, it sounds like a very interesting thing to me, and it opens up a whole world of possibilities for new NUCs with highly specialized designs, form factors and configurations developed under the leadership of ASUS. So, for example, we could see NUC for professionals included in the ProArt series, specialized gaming models within the ROG series and others more focused on office automation and less demanding tasks within the ASUS Expert series.
We’ll see what ASUS surprises us with in the coming months, but the truth is that it’s very clear to me that Intel made the right decision to leave the NUC in the hands of this company. The Taiwanese company has the option in its hands to maintain the existing ecosystem with all its models or to go further and expand it, as I said before.
Barring a surprise, the next generation of NUCs should be based on the new Intel Meteor Lake processors they use Intel 4 production node. Don’t get carried away by the numbering, this generation is indeed manufactured in 7nm, but this Intel node has such a high transistor density that it surpasses even TSMC’s 5nm node, which is why the chip giant decided to use this nomenclature.
If all goes according to plan, they should have new NUCs based on the next generation of Intel Core start arriving at the end of this yearAnd most likely we will also see new models configured with Intel Core Gen14, known as Raptor Lake Refresh.
