WhatsApp has long had a major limitation: the messaging app didn’t allow you to send messages to contacts who weren’t saved on your phone. They always had to first save a number on your phone or send a custom invite link to reach you. There are also third-party apps that handle this functionality.
That is changing now. WhatsApp’s latest update makes it possible to send messages to unsaved contacts in the same way as to people who are already in your contact list.
Open WhatsApp and tap the message icon to send a new message. You should now be in the window select contact At Search by name or phone number show (the magnifying glass). Then type or paste your new contact’s phone number into the search bar.
Now a box with To chat next to the telephone number (or Invite if the person concerned does not have a WhatsApp account). Tapping it will open a new chat window. Send a message to start the conversation.
Do you plan to chat with this person regularly? The option to save the contact will now appear below your first message. From then on, the person will also appear with their name and profile picture between your contacts and the chat history.
WhatsApp has a habit of rolling out new features gradually. If you don’t already see this option, make sure you have the latest version of the messaging app. You may also have to be patient. Also discover how to use WhatsApp on multiple phones or how to secretly leave a group conversation.
