The Shuttle DS50U is a compact PC based on the latest low-voltage Intel Raptor Lake “U” series processors. It’s designed for retail, office or IoT applications, but it’s also great for general computing on any desktop.

The mini-PC market was rocked last week by the discontinuation of the Intel NUC, a great reference in the sector. Subsequently, we learned of an alliance between Intel and ASUS to continue the development and support of NUC systems. The segment will not suffer because there are great specialists and also another good deal with AMD processors.

The Shuttle DS50U is a good example of a modern mini-PC. It has a metal and polycarbonate chassis with dimensions included in the 200 x 165 x 39.5 mm. Under the hood are two SODIMM slots with support for up to 64 GB DDR5-5200 memorytwo M.2 2280 slots for installing SSD drives and a 2.5-inch slot for expanding storage capacity.

The hardware base is made up of 13th generation Intel processors, the Raptor Lake ‘U’ series for notebooks, which, together with the cheaper Intel N, are the most used in mini-PCs. We see configurations to choose between Core i3-1315U, Core i5-1335U and Core i7-1355U. They all draw 15 watts and in fact this Shuttle DS50U is supplied passive cooling without annoying fans.

The compact offers sufficient connectivity with a good number of connection ports, from two Ethernet LANs (2.5 GbE and 1 GbE) and an optional wireless card for Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth. It also has 8 USB 3.2 and 2.0 ports to match audio and HDMI, Display Port and VGA video outputs that can power up to three 4K displays simultaneously.

Shuttle ships it with a 90-watt power adapter. Neither the price nor the availability was mentioned, nor the operating system (probably Windows 11) or whether the manufacturer will also offer it in barebone variants so that the user can install other systems such as Linux and custom RAM and storage. A model to consider thanks to the use of the best Intel processors and passive cooling, always valuable in this type of device.
