Motorola’s latest foldable smartphone, the Motorola Razr Plus, passed a durability test that ended up revealing an unexpected issue when tested by YouTuber Zach Nelson. The device appeared on the market with the aim to compete with the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5, but in recent weeks, users have been testing it in a series of tests.
The endurance test began with an attempt to scratch the screen of the Razr Plus. The 6.9-inch internal display, protected by a protective film, already showed scratches at the second level on the Mohs hardness scale. At the third level, deeper scratches appeared, which indicates that the surface can be easily damaged even by fingernail scratches.
Despite the IP52 rating providing limited protection against water and dust, the Motorola Razr Plus held up well to being exposed to a lot of sand. Nelson noted that there was no significant damage that would indicate potentially more serious damage to the device.
However, the bend test revealed a peculiar weakness in the phone. The large 3.6-inch external AMOLED screen could not withstand the pressure. When the Razr Plus was folded out at the back, the foldable inner screen remained intact, but the outer screen shattered into pieces.
Screen cracked but works fine
In contrast, Motorola’s device, the Galaxy Z Flip 4, showed no physical damage during Nelson’s durability test. It bent hard and made a popping sound, but remained functional. Thus, the structure of the Samsung device is considered to be slightly superior to the competitor.
Despite the incident with the external display, the Razr Plus showed a relatively normal level of resistance throughout the remainder of the test. The inner screen started to get scratches at level 2 on the Mohs scale, but it stayed intact despite trying to fold it back.
In addition, despite the fact that during the test the screen unexpectedly broke, it continued to function normally. Both the photo and the time were still displayed on the reader, showing that, despite the apparent fragility of the internal screen, the device is resistant to further work in the hands of users.
