The fire has burned large swathes of forest since it broke out in the mountainous area on Tuesday. It damaged three hotels in the coastal town of Kiotari on Saturday, according to the Athens News Agency.

Civil protection authorities warned of a very high risk of wildfires in Rhodes and other parts of Greece on Sunday as temperatures are expected to reach 45 degrees Celsius at the height of the heat wave.

Fires are common in Greece, but hotter, drier and windier summers have made the country a hotbed of wildfires in recent years. Forecasters warn that the current grueling temperatures will last until the end of the month.
