Former U.S. Vice President and Republican presidential candidate Mike Pence said on Sunday that he considers the words and actions of former President Donald Trump that led to the attacks on Capitol Hill on January 6, 2021, reckless, though probably not criminal.

“While their words were reckless, from what I know, I’m still not convinced that they were criminals,” Pence said on CNN’s State of the Union program.

On Tuesday, Trump said he had received a letter saying he was the subject of a grand jury investigation in connection with his attempts to undo defeat in the 2020 presidential election.

The letter represents by far the clearest sign yet that Trump, the Republican presidential nominee’s favorite in 2024, could face federal criminal charges for his attempts to stay in power after losing the election to Democrat Joe Biden.

“Hopefully it doesn’t come to that,” Pence said of a possible indictment of Trump: he said Americans should be given the right to determine whether he is guilty.

“Her actions were reckless,” Pence said, adding “to be honest, I don’t know what her intentions were” on January 6, 2021.

Before Trump supporters stormed the Capitol in 2021, the then president repeatedly lashed out at Pence for refusing to try to stop Congress from confirming Biden’s victory in the 2020 election.

Pence said on Sunday that Trump was wrong to think the then vice president could reverse the result. Some rioters chanted “hang Mike Pence” during the riots on Capitol Hill.

“I know I did my duty that day,” Pence said Sunday. (Reuters).
