Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Guatemala this Sunday to demand the resignation of Attorney General Consuelo Porras, as well as other government ministry officials they point to for interfere in the electoral process of the June 25 elections.

Those present at the march noted that “regardless of who was at a disadvantage in the elections,” the authorities “should respect the decision made in the elections and not interfere.”

The protest, which was attended by civil society organizations and organizations of indigenous peoples, began in front of the Supreme Court and ended in front of the prosecutor’s office. From megaphones, the protesters called, in addition to the resignation of Porras, for the resignation of the head of the Special Prosecutor’s Office to Combat Impunity (Fechi), Rafael Curruchiche, and prosecutor Cynthia Monterroso.

Following this march, the State Department issued a statement stating that it is “an autonomous institution that is not subordinate to any national or international organization, its actions are carried out in accordance with the principle of legality, in accordance with its constitutional mandate, for this reason it rejects any attempt to pressure and coercion to stop any authorized ongoing investigation.”

The organization believes that “the sole purpose of these campaigns is to stop ongoing investigations”, for this reason it condemned that “disinformation and de facto measures to stop investigations contribute to impunity and distance from the rule of law”.

Finally, the prosecutor’s office emphasized that it guarantees the holding of the second round of elections in accordance with the decision of the Constitutional Court, “and strongly and decisively declares to the people of Guatemala that it will always be that bulwark of justice that will monitor all victims of crimes so that they receive answers to their demands, investigating all complaints made.”

The Supreme Electoral Tribunal declared valid the presidential elections on June 25, in which the candidates Sandra Torres from the National Unity of Hope (UNE, Conservatives) and Bernardo Arevalo from the left Seed Movement received the largest number of votes.

However, after the elections, the prosecutor’s office tried to suspend the electoral candidacy of the “Seeds” Movement, although the Constitutional Court supported the party and overturned the decision of the prosecutor’s office. The prosecutor’s office raided both the headquarters of this political group and the headquarters of the TSE Register of Citizens, and also ordered the detention of Eleonora Castillo, deputy director of this body.
