TikTok’s latest (and very smart) move best understood in the current context of social mediaand more specifically, considering the window of opportunity that has opened up as a result of the erratic management of one of the great leaders in the sector. And yes, of course, I’m talking about Twitter, soon to be X, and how, in the face of its hypothetical demise, many other companies have started to take positions.
The clearest and most recent example of this can be found in Threads, a Twitter alternative created by Meta and originally linked to Instagram. A network that is visually and functionally remarkably similar to Twitter, to the point that Elon Musk has even threatened to sue Meta for said “coincidences.” But it is true that after a spectacular launch, even more so considering that the service is not available from the European Union, the latest data confirms that its usage is declining compared to the peaks of its first days.
More persistent over time and designed as an eternal alternative to Twitter, we meet a mastodon, which has seen its user base grow on several occasions where Twitter has “stumbled”, but never enough to establish itself as a true alternative to the social network it emulates. Even so, it shows us and reminds us that the once 140-character social network has always been a reference in its sector.
Meta’s move with Threads was quite smart, as it appeals to an Instagram audience that is slightly younger than Twitter, while also aspiring to take over the “mines” of Elon Musk’s network. And they had to think something similar about the network preferred by the youngest, because, as we can read in TechCruch, TikTok is already rolling out the text posts featurea possibility that until recently those responsible for the social network excluded, but finally decided to accept.
There is no specific information about the plans regarding the deployment of this feature, but the goal is to eventually make it global. When users start using it, they’ll find that when accessing the post creation feature, they’ll see options to upload a video or use an image, along with a new text feature, to which, of course, users will be able to add other elements like audio, emoticons, etc. in addition to writing.
At least at first glance, it doesn’t seem like TikTok’s texting feature could pose a real threat to Twitter, as the user profiles of the two networks are quite different. However, yes, it is true that some transmission can occurwhich allows TikTok to improve some numbers, the current ones, which are already quite positive.
