With the new application, an Android user no longer needs to install the app on the Chromebook. However, the application has been rolled out to a limited extent on some Android 13-compatible devices from Google and Xiaomi for the time being.

The update replaces the beta version that Google sent out for streaming Android apps to Chromebooks. The new application aims to give more users the opportunity to use smartphone apps on their Chromebook without having to install the actual apps. Google announced the new update in a blog post. According to the tech giant, the application will soon be available on initially a limited number of Android 13 devices.

Google and Xiaomi

According to Engadget, owners of a Pixel 4a (Google) or at least 12T (Xiaomi) will be the first lucky ones to get started with the application. This requires both the smartphone and Chromebook to be connected to the same WiFi network and physically close to each other. If your network doesn’t support the feature, you can still set up a shortcut through Chrome OS’s Instant Theater.

Of course, to connect the phone to a Chromebook, Bluetooth must be enabled on both devices. In a help article, Google gives a few more tips to ensure a smooth connection. Click on the phone icon (bottom right) and follow a few simple instructions to start the connection. Please note that if you are using a Chromebook at school or work, certain features may be disabled and you will need to contact the administrator.

Additional functions

The Google upgrade (M115) brings some new features in addition to the streaming application. For example, it will be possible to sign PDF documents and save signatures for later use. Finally, Google has given the Shortcut app a makeover. The keyboard-oriented shortcut app has received a new interface that makes it easier to look up in the app.
