Meta cancels Quest Pro 2 production, only invests in Quest 3

Meta Corporation has decided to stop the development and production of its Quest Pro 2 model – virtual and augmented reality glasses. The informational website reveals that manufacturer Goertek will only continue to produce “Quest Pro” models as long as they have components in stock, making it clear that the first version of VR/AR will also have no continuity in the market. For executives, the focus is not to confuse the public as Quest 3 is also in production.

The page also confirms that the company is aiming for a big launch of the Quest 3 with specs supposedly superior to those of the Quest Pro 2 and at lower prices. According to them, the glasses will have an even higher resolution, as well as a depth sensor and two 4-megapixel cameras. The official announcement raises the original MSRP of $499.99 with expected arrival in Brazil in Spring 2023.

It is worth noting that Meta itself has not officially commented on the cancellation of the development of virtual / augmented reality glasses. Given that many do not comment on their canceled projects, it is possible that there will be no confirmation on this matter.

Mark Zuckerberg wasn’t impressed with Apple Vision Pro

For an executive, the two companies’ visions of interactive headset technology are very different.

The first Meta Quest Pro model was released in October 2022 and received mostly negative reviews upon arrival. One of the main complaints from the public was related to its design, which was listed as being too heavy on the head and with a format that did not fit users. It reached US$1,500 but was soon reduced to US$1,000 to match the market.

Another important factor is that the “Pro” model was not created for the general public, but for the corporate market. So much so that its “gaming” aspect barely appeared in advertising campaigns close to its launch. Its biggest competitor in this area of mixed reality, the Apple Vision Pro, is expected to arrive only in 2024 at a suggested price of $3,499 – roughly R$17,000.
