The new Microsoft AMPX division will include teams currently working on Surface duo, Microsoft Launcher, Phone Link app (formerly Your Phone), and Swiftkey keyboard. Prior to the reorganization, members of these teams were part of various teams in the Microsoft Mobile Experiences (MMX) division, which was also responsible for iOS apps.

Microsoft’s new division dedicated to Android was created to help the company improve its solutions for the operating system, as it has become one of the company’s core businesses in recent years. It’s worth remembering that Microsoft is currently also offering support for running Android apps on Windows 11 through a partnership with the Amazon Appstore in the US.

The new AMPX division will be led by Ali Akgun and will report directly to Panos Panay. In a note to the site Windows CenterA Microsoft spokesperson had this to say about the reorganization and creation of the new division: “Like all companies, we evaluate our business on a regular basis. We recently made organizational changes to strengthen our impact and better serve our customers and partners.”.

The site claims that Microsoft has “big plans” for Android and Windows in the coming years. This includes more integration between Android smartphones and Windows computers, beyond what’s already offered by the Phone Link app. If this turns out to be true, Microsoft will presumably position Android smartphones as extensions to Windows PCs with greater interoperability.
