Recently, a group of researchers from Florida International University (FIU), led by marine scientist Yannis Papastamatiou, made an interesting observation about sharks. The study was published in Biology Letters.
By using innovative tracking methods such as a video camera, sensors and sensors and “super social tag” to detect other spotted sharks nearby, they were able to gain valuable data.
From these data it became clear that several sharks form social bonds and spend time together for a common purpose – foraging for food. The scientists also found a link between the sharks’ sociability and successful hunting, based on the experience of other members of the group.
They suggest that similar behavior may be characteristic of Guadalupe Island, where sharks congregate at certain times.
