Poland investigates avian flu outbreak among domestic cats

An outbreak of the H5N1 A virus, known as bird flu, has affected dozens of domestic cats in Poland. checked by veterinarians due to its unusual characteristics and potential expansion hazard.

In an interview published on Tuesday by the Polish press, the veterinarian who discovered one of the first cases of this outbreak explained how he warned on June 18 that on Internet discussion groups specializing in animal epidemics, several colleagues reported cases of deceased domestic cats after the onset of severe neurological and respiratory symptoms.

A veterinarian who has his own practice in the city of Pulawy (center) and who preferred to remain anonymous because he worked for the state, informed the media across the country about the disease and publicly urged domestic cats not to leave the country and their masters will stop feeding them raw meat, one of the possible sources of the disease.

Only two weeks later several Polish laboratories confirmed that these were cases of bird flu, which confirmed the impressions of the veterinarian Puława.

So far, 61 cats have died.some of them have been euthanized due to the outbreak, which worries Polish health authorities.

Several veterinarians across the country have criticized the response of the GIW, the National Veterinary Inspectorate, which is accused of “posted some superficial advice” and by failing, for example, to test canned cat food consumed in the country.

A Polish veterinarian, in a radio interview on Tuesday, assured that “the chief GIW inspector first it took a long time to admit that the virus had been discovered, without specifying that it was bird flu; then he confirmed, but said that these were isolated cases; and finally questioned the results of the analysis.”

The true extent of the outbreak, whose most troubling feature is that it occurred at the same time but in very distant areas, has yet to be determined, and some experts say that the true number of cases may be several hundred.

Last week, World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stressed that his body “He is monitoring the situation in close cooperation with his partners and the Polish government.”
