Artificial intelligence will speed up Ukraine’s demining process – expert

As a result of the Russian occupation, Ukraine became one of the most mined countries in the world. That is why it is important not to focus on the old methods, but to approach solving the demining problem creatively by using robotic systems, artificial intelligence systems that can detect the presence of danger without human intervention.

As quoted by Ukrinform with reference to Ukrainian Radio, this was expressed at the conference “Humanitarian demining in Ukraine: problems and solutions” by Serhiy Zubarevsky, representative of the Secretariat of the National Mine Operations Authority, the Main Department of Mine Action, Civil Protection and Environmental Security of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.

According to the data he provided, about 160,000 square kilometers of land today (about two half the Czech Republic or Poland) needs to be examined for the presence of explosive objects. The government aims to make 80 percent of these areas safe within ten years.

“If we approach solving this problem creatively in accordance with existing standards today, the task is quite real. We understand that not all of this 160,000 square kilometers of land is mined or dangerous,” Revsky said.

According to him, a creative approach is the use of the latest tools, especially drones, robotic systems, systems with artificial intelligence, which can determine the presence of danger without human intervention, by studying the results of the site survey by drones. So, it’s a creative approach – not sticking to the old ways when you walk around and find out if the area is dirty.

According to Zubarevsky, Ukraine has already created a system for controlling the quality of demining: “We have conformity assessment bodies, and a demining quality management system has been created, which consists of two parts – this is a guarantee of quality, that is, the confidence that the operator who has declared his demining ability can actually do this, and quality control is a control of the results of the work of demining operators.”

Zubarevsky reports that as of today, seven operators have been certified in Ukraine, including HALO Trust, Demining Solutions, Danish Refugee Group, Swiss Fund for Humanitarian Demining and Norwegian Aid to People. Among them are two commercial Ukrainian operators — Demining Solutions and Ukroboronservice. Additionally, several organizations have applied for certification and are preparing to receive certification and begin humanitarian demining missions.

On a positive note, the GU mine countermeasures representative noted that all operators work at the expense of the donors. In other words, the state does not spend money to ensure the activities of these organizations. Currently, about 10-12 organizations planning to become operators in mine action activities are going through the certification process.
