An international consortium of scientists and conservationists working on the BioRescue project has succeeded in obtaining five new northern white rhinoceros embryos, which gives hope for an increase in the number of these animals, of which only two specimens remain on the planet, and both are females.

This was reported EFE today Jan Stejskal, spokesman for the Dvur Kralove Zoo and Czech representative biorescue save white rhino.

New embryoswhich is 29 zygotes of the northern subspecies (Ceratotherium simum Cottoni) available in the laboratory in Cremona (Italy), were obtained using assisted reproduction methods from the frozen semen of two deceased males and from 18 eggs recovered last May from a female Fatu, who lives in Kenya’s Ol Pejeta nature reserve.

“The eggs were fertilized at the Avantea laboratory in Cremona, resulting in 5 embryos, the largest number obtained to date after gamete collection,” Stejskal emphasized.

Also, two new women southern sister subspecies (Ceratotherium simum simum) for future implantation of these embryos as it is not viable in Fatu.

The northern white rhino, classified as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), is one of the the most endangered mammals on the planet and of which there are only two females left in the world.

The Czech Zoo Dvur Králové participates in the Biorescue project, which is funded by the German Ministry of Education and Science and the Czech Foundation Nadace CEZ.
