Finnish and Norwegian regulators have banned Russian tech group Yandex and its Netherlands-based partner Ridetech International from transferring personal customer data collected by Yango taxi service in those countries to Russia.
This was reported by Reuters, Ukrinform reports.
This decision was made due to the fact that from September 1, the FSB of Russia will have access to the databases of taxi collectors. The Yango taxi service, which operates in 14 countries including Finland and Norway, is one of the many services offered by Russian Yandex.
“There is a serious risk to privacy, as Russian authorities can potentially monitor the movements of Norwegian citizens through Yango,” the Norwegian data protection official said in a statement.
Last August, Finnish authorities seized Yandex’s assets in the country, including what is believed to be the company’s only data center outside of Russia, after the company’s founder and former CEO, Arkady Volozh, was placed on the European Union’s sanctions list.
