Microsoft Edge is constantly being updated with new features, some of which are very useful and some are even more surprising. The company is reportedly testing a new feature in its browser that lets you save screenshots of visited web pages in your browser history. This is a bit confusing as the average user might be confused as to why Microsoft would want to do this.

Microsoft Edge 117, currently available for testing on the Canary and Dev channels, has a new feature that lets you take a screenshot of every page you visit. The feature is called “Save site screenshots for history” and Microsoft explains it this way: We’ll take and save screenshots of the sites you visit so you can quickly return to the site you want from your history.

This new feature in Microsoft Edge looks pretty useful at first glance. Once enabled, you can revisit any page in your browsing history without an internet connection. As Neowin points out, you can also view a thumbnail of a web page in the past by hovering over it. However, Microsoft has given this feature a rather confusing name and description.

This can trick average users into thinking they take a screenshot of every web page they visit. Additionally, Microsoft has yet to disclose how it will protect user privacy and security while saving web pages for later access.

Microsoft should at least offer the option to manually save selected web pages instead of taking screenshots of each site. Hopefully, the developers will release this feature on the stable channel in a more flashy and improved state.

The feature is currently in testing and is disabled by default. If you’re on the Canary or Dev Edge channel, you can use this feature to “Settings” > “Privacy & Services”. Alternatively, you can follow the direct link. edge://settings/privacy, To check if this option is available.
