A Neuralinkbiotechnology startup founded Elon Musk, announced Tuesday (8) that it has raised an impressive $280 million investment in a fundraising round. The company shared the news via Twitter (X), owned by Musk. The Series D round was led by Founders Fund, a San Francisco-based venture capital firm founded by Peter Thiel, a controversial billionaire who also co-founded PayPal.

We are very excited about this next chapter in Neuralink.“, the company said in a statement.

The goal of the brain chip startup is to connect the human brain to a computer using implants. These ambitions are the aspiration Musk has been working toward for five years. So far, the company has only conducted animal testing and has faced scrutiny following the monkey’s death in 2022 during a design trial aimed at getting the animal to play the computer game Pong.

Controversy surrounding the project

Macaque monkeys have been used in tests conducted by Neuralink as the company develops implantable Bluetooth technology chips to be inserted into monkey brains. The company claims that these chips can communicate with computers through a small receiver.

Elon Musk’s Neuralink Receives FDA Approval for Trials

The approval marks significant progress in the search for treatments for neurological disorders.

The funding news comes months after Musk announced the company was moving towards human trials. The billionaire revealed at a December recruiting event that Neuralink has submitted “most” of its paperwork to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and could begin human trials within six months.

However, officials said the company is rushing to market, leading to negligent animal deaths and a federal investigation, according to a December report by Reuters.

Before Neuralink brain implants can be mass-produced and enter the general market, regulatory approval must be obtained. In 2021, the FDA released a paper outlining the agency’s initial thoughts on brain-computer interface devices, noting that the field is “developing rapidly.”

Neuralink tweeted on Monday that the company was recruiting and invited job seekers to “participate in engineering tasks to restore vision and mobility“.
