Papers, Please: 10 years and 5 million copies sold

There are few games that have reached and/or surpassed the relevance of Papers Pleasenot just in the indie gaming ecosystem, but in the gaming world in general. Developed by Lucas Pope, who later surprised us again with Return of the Obra Dinn, we are talking about one of the key titles in the field of games developed by a single person, something that seemed to be at the end of the 20th century. will disappear, but with games like Papers, Please, Minecraft (although now it depends on the complete studio), Stardew Valley, Undertale, Fez or Dust: An Elysian Tale, it turned out to be a completely feasible option.

In case you’re unfamiliar with it, Papers, Please puts you in the role of a citizen of a fictional Soviet-inspired nation, Arstotzka, who just appointed customs representative. So, on the one hand, you will have to check the documentation of all the people who want to enter your country, and then you will have to try to take care of your family with the money that you put in every day, and as you probably already imagined, so much will depend on expertise and the decisions you make every day at work.

The initial premise seems simple enough, but in reality its development is much wider than you can imagine. On the one hand, you will have to face increasingly complex controls, with changing rules, and this will also make your decision-making more complicated more than once. And that’s another great point of Papers, Please, because you will gradually face situations in which you will have to decide whether to follow procedures and rules, or whether, on the contrary, to put your personal ethics first.

Papers, Please: 10 years and 5 million copies sold

Launched ten years ago, although its arrival on other platforms is much more recent, Papers, Please celebrates its tenth anniversary and has sold five million copies. So it is currently possible to purchase it for only 1.79 euros, which is well below the usual price of 8.99 euros. It is already the second time in these ten years that its price has fallen this far, in previous events the discount was lower.

To celebrate both milestones, Lucas Pope released an online game that reproduces part of Papers, Please on what appears to be a classic Game & Watch console found here. Also, also The game’s soundtrack has been released on both Apple Music and Spotify and a store that we still don’t know if it’s temporary or will last over time has come out with t-shirts, mugs, and stickers featuring various themes from the game. A selection in which I admit that yes, I missed a product with “Glory of Arstotzka”.
