The Villavicencio crime took place at the end of the day on the outskirts of the Colosseum, where the applicant participated in an election rally along with supporters as part of the election campaign on the eve of the August 20 elections.

Villavicencio, identified as a staunch critic of former President Rafael Correa (2007–2017), mobilized under police protection in the face of threats he had received weeks earlier.
